Dr Catherine Hamlin has lived in Ethiopia since 1959 and has worked tirelessly to help the victims of fistulas – devastating injuries caused by obstructed labour in childbirth. The surgery she pioneered has helped tens of thousands of sufferers return to normal life after being shunned by their families and communities. The hospitals she has set up in her adopted country now act as teaching centres for obstetricians and surgeons from many developing nations.
Catherine’s Gift is the follow up to the popular Hospital by the River, which detailed the work of Dr Hamlin and her husband in setting up the hospital. In Catherine’s Gift we learn of the fate of some of the woman who have been treated at Dr Hamlin’s hospital and see clearly the long-term impact of their treatment. We also get insight into the daily work of Dr Hamlin and her staff.
Funds from the book support the work of the hospital.
