Nan Paterson was born in Mackay, Queensland, in 1923, and lived in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast until her death in late 2015. She started her art training with a sponsorship to the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne. Her studies were interrupted when she served in the AIF during World War II. In 1946 Nan Paterson resumed her studies at the National Gallery Art School and was tutored by Charles Wheeler, M. Vaughan Griffin and William Dargie. Her work is hung in many private and public collections in Australia and overseas. In 1995, her portrait of Dr Gertrude Langer was acquired by the National Library of Australia for the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Nan’s portrait of author Kylie Tennant was acquired by them in 2006. Later that same year two other Paterson portraits were acquired by the University of Queensland for their collection.
