Birth Day captures the exquisite birth of Tamaya Okumura, who arrives into the hands of her mother, Naoli Viinaver Lopez, a Mexican midwife. Naoli narrates over the images what she was feeling and thinking during labour. There is background information about this lovely home water birth of her third child and Naoli is seen working as a midwife (with her baby); and we meet and hear from her family, all of whom were together on the day of Tamaya’s birth. There is discussion of the support her partner gave and his role, and the presence of her children.
This expanded version includes a number of additional short films – interviews with Naoli about her work, interviews with her partner Hiroyuki about his role and with her parents who were also present, footage of the birth of the placenta (and the making of a ‘placenta print’), and more… This film is installed in the Museum of Science, Boston.
