AIMING FOR NATURAL BIRTH
Light Source Films, Australia,
88 minutes
Review by Andrea Quanchi
This Australian made video offers couples guidance on how they can actively prepare for a natural birth. The video, through its four parts, offers ideas and sources of physical and emotional preparation, birth options and an overview of the stages of labour. All options offered in the video would be available throughout Australia and each couple explains what led them to choose this option and follows them through their antenatal journey to give birth.
Antenatal preparation is followed in different settings using naturopathy and herbalist support, obstetrician and midwife, childbirth educators and doulas. Various options for antenatal education are demonstrated showing different groups options and individualised models offering continuity of caregiver. There is a good section on fathers' involvement in birth where discussion centres around a group of expectant fathers and a male childbirth educator.
Several birth sequences, including a water birth, are shown using still black and white photos and video clips where women in different environments are using a variety of positions. The importance of preparing a birth plan and discussing it with all parties involved is apparent and women are encouraged to find out whether the protocols of their chosen birth place match their own needs. Perineal massage is well covered along with sound advice for a woman's support team on how they can help the birthing woman cope with each stage of labour.
Overall, 'Aiming for a Natural Birth' is a comprehensive guide that will encourage women to explore the options available to them more thoroughly.
