BREASTFEEDING:
A GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL POSITIONING
Mark-It TV, UK 1997
Review by Sharron Cole
This video is the breastfeeding video you show when you want to make key points about how to successfully breastfeed when you have limited time. It is a 'how to' video rather than a 'why' one.
The video opens with babies being put to the breast and the statement that breastfeeding is a learned skill that needs to be taught. The next segment concentrates on positioning of the mother and baby and the correct way to bring the baby to the breast. Latching on is shown very well, as is what to look for when the baby is well latched on. The last segment shows how to feed lying down.
This video will be of value in an antenatal class as an introduction to parents about what constitutes successful positioning. However, I see it of being more value in the immediate postpartum period when the mother is actually learning the skill. She would actually be able to sit and view the video, practising the various movements to ensure that what she was doing was correct. As the demonstrations are so clear, it would be easy even for someone not knowledgeable about breastfeeding to compare the video and the mother learning to breastfeed and observe differences that the mother herself may not notice. It would therefore be a great resource both for an antenatal class but more particularly for use in the postnatal period.
