In this comprehensive resource, subtitled A Practical Handbook for the health care professional, the author, Rosemary Payne, provides a practical introduction to many different relaxation techniques that may usefully contribute to patient care. Each technique is easy to teach and use and has been demonstrated to be effective in the clinical situation. Key features of Relaxation Techniques include:

  • The focus is on the practical aspects of relaxation techniques in relation to patient care;
  • Cognitive approaches (eg self awareness, imagery...) are included;
  • Somatic approaches to relaxation are also covered (eg progressive relaxation);
  • Ready-to-use schedules and scripts for working with clients;
  • Discussion covers the pitfalls as well as the benefits of each relaxation method;
  • The book is fully illustrated with both line drawings and photographs;
  • This evidence-based text is supported by up-to-date references.

In the 4th edition Rosemary Payne combines her experience with that of Marie Donaghy, author, professor of Physiotherapy and member of the British Psychological Society. They aim to provide a quick and informative guide to selecting the most appropriate relaxation technique for each client.

The new edition is fully updated, reorganised, and includes a new chapter on Mindfulness.
