Speakers
Alison Barrett BSc MD FRCS(C) FRANZCOG IBCLC was, until recently, Director of Maternity Services at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand She is a La Leche League leader, an IBCLC lactation consultant, and has served as a member of the NZ National Breastfeeding Advisory Committee and the La Leche League of NZ Board of Consultants. She has recently returned to her homeland, Canada, to set up a new mother-and-baby-friendly birthing unit, north of Toronto.

Carol Bartle RN RM IBCLC MHSc has worked in hospitals and the community for 36 years as a NICU practitioner and NICU community outreach nurse, well-child health nurse, midwife, family support worker and educator. She is a BFHI assessor and a member of the La Leche League NZ Board of Consultants. Carol presents the Breastfeeding Update and Ethics in Lactation Practice seminars for CAPERS. Carol contributed a chapter, "Dancing Birth: Choreography and Improvisation" to "The Art and Soul of Midwifery".

James J McKenna PhD is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Mother- Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana USA. He has been recognised internationally for his work on infant sleep with many awards, and is widely published in this field. James is the author of "Sleeping with your Baby".

Michel Odent MD introduced the concepts of birthing pools and homelike birthing rooms while practising in a hospital at Pithiviers in France. He went into home birth practice after a hospital career and is the founder of the Primal Health Research Centre. He has written 11 books published in 21 languages, including "Birth Reborn", "Primal Health", "The Farmer and the Obstetrician", "The Scientification of Love", "Birth and Breastfeeding" and "The Caesarean".

Program
8:00am  Registration. Tea/Coffee
8:30am  Breastfeeding in the age of the safe caesarean.
Questions suggested by the strong connections between birth physiology and lactation physiology.
Michel Odent MD
9:30am  Where do babies come from?
The concepts of safety and importance in birth as an event or a crisis waiting to happen are explored. Is experiencing birth another of the mainly optional choices of motherhood, with opting out having no biological consequences? The focus will be on the changing climate of birth and possible ways to reverse the current trends.
Alison Barrett BSc MD FRCS(C) FRANZCOG IBCLC
10:15am  Morning Tea
10:45am  Breastfeeding and Safe Co-Sleeping
What each family and health professional should know
James J McKenna PhD
11:45am  Oxytocin in the age of the "Scientification of Love".
A great variety of disciplines participate in the "Scientification of Love". This session will focus on what we have learnt recently about the behavioural effects of oxytocin.
Michel Odent MD
12:45pm  Lunch
1:45pm  The Scientification of Breastfeeding - For better or worse
Research in human lactation has provided some argument for those who aim to protect, promote and support breastfeeding, but the scientification of breastfeeding has a downside. Breastfeeding is now discussed from a bottle feeding mentality, and it has become mechanized, so that breast milk has had an exaggerated importance compared to breastfeeding. With commodification of breast milk, breastfeeding is easily replaced and the mother also becomes replaceable.
Alison Barrett BSc MD FRCS(C) FRANZCOG IBCLC
2.30pm  Mother-Baby choreography and post-birth improvisations
Mothers and babies dance connected duets during labour, birth and the post-birth period. When these intimate choreographies are derailed by birth interventions, post-birth practices or mother-baby separation, thoughtful improvisations and remedial mother-baby care can maintain, restore and support "body-knowing", attachment and breastfeeding.
Carol Bartle RN RM MHSc IBCLC
3:30pm  Mother-Infant Breastfeeding and Bedsharing: Ongoing research
Perspectives on how and why the controversy
refuses to go away
James J McKenna PhD
4.15pm  Close
Note: Because of the travel commitments in such a tour, we prefer to finish a little earlier and not have afternoon tea. A short afternoon tea break will be included where flights allow a later finish (in which case we will finish at 4.30pm).
The speakers will be available during the conference, but on most occasions, not after the closing session.
